Telehealth FAQ
Is telehealth as effective as in-person counseling?
Yes. Research shows that telehealth can be just as effective as in-person therapy for most concerns, including trauma, anxiety, depression, and ADHD. The therapeutic relationship and process remain the same only the format is different.
Can children and teens use telehealth?
Yes. Children and teens can benefit greatly from online therapy. For younger children, parent or guardian involvement is often important to support progress. Teens often enjoy the flexibility and comfort of logging in from home.
What if my internet drops during session?
Technology issues can happen! If your connection is interrupted, we’ll use a backup plan, typically switching to a phone call, so your session can continue without added stress.
Is telehealth secure?
Absolutely. All sessions take place on a HIPAA-compliant video platform. This means your privacy and confidentiality are protected just as they would be in an office setting.
What if I don’t feel comfortable with technology?
That’s okay! Before your first session, I’ll send you simple step-by-step instructions and we’ll make sure you’re comfortable with the platform. Most clients find it very easy after the first try.
Do I need special equipment?
All you need is:
A stable internet connection
A device with a camera and microphone (computer, tablet, or smartphone)
A quiet, private space where you feel comfortable
Getting Ready for Your Telehealth Session
To help you feel prepared and comfortable for your first online counseling session, here are a few simple steps:
1. Find Your Space
Choose a quiet, private place where you feel safe to talk openly.
Let others in your household know you’ll be in session to minimize interruptions.
Consider using headphones for extra privacy.
2. Check Your Technology
Make sure you have a stable internet connection.
Use a device with a camera and microphone (computer, tablet, or smartphone).
Test your video and audio before session begins.
3. Gather Your Essentials
Have water, tissues, or a notebook nearby if you like to take notes.
Make sure to have completed any intake forms or documents your therapist asked you to complete.
4. Reduce Distractions
Silence notifications on your phone or computer.
Close unnecessary tabs or apps.
If possible, use headphones to stay focused and maintain privacy.
5. Log In Early
Use the secure telehealth link provided by your therapist.
Try logging in a few minutes early to work out any technical issues.
Remember: It’s okay if things aren’t perfect! Technology can sometimes be tricky, but we’ll always have a backup plan (like switching to a phone call) so your session can continue smoothly.
